Either defrost heater is bad, defrost t-stat or the defrost control. Usually the t-stat is the first problem which is connected to the evaporator coils with one lead going to the heater. Hope this helps. Rick
You are correct about a failure in the defrost circuit. It could be the heater, the thermostat, or the timer. To pinpoint the problem, you will need to get a voltmeter and check for voltage at various components in the refrigerator. Download a schematic from the Amana web site to help you do this quicker. You can buy replacement parts at a variety of appliance parts stores and internet sites. Reply to this posting if you require additional assistance.

The freezer coil in the lower freezer section freezes up with ice. I have the upper section at 5C and the freezer 18C. We first notice that there is water under the fruit drawers and the fridge seems to be running a lot. This tells me that it is time to take the inside of the freezer apart and apply heat to the coil until it is free of ice. The coil is so full of ice that the freezer has to be heated to remove the outer panels as the ice is holding the panels.

When we unplug it and plug it back in , the panel blinks for a second but no sound. We have a side by side maytag plus refridgerator freezer that has frost on and behind the back panel of the inside of the freezer. Everyting started to thaw. This happened to us before and we were told that there wasnt proper circulation in the freeze. We purchased a GE Profile bottom freezer from a liquidator shop. After about 5 days of use the fridge portion began to warm and the freezer went into deep freeze. Still no fix. Then they took it back to the store, "worked on it" and returned it to us a week later. It worked well for about anothe
